The University of New Mexico has established research laboratories at the Centre for Global Health Research, a Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) Centre in western Kenya. The Center is located about 11Km from Kisumu City (15 min. drive), situated on the northeastern shores of Lake Victoria, along the Kisumu-Busia road. The mandate of the Centre includes studies on malaria, HIV, and schistosomiasis; focusing on vector management, pathogenesis, immunology and chemotherapy.

The Centre has a number of national and international groups working on a wide array of different research projects. These groups include CDC, US-Army Medical Research Unit, University of Georgia, Case Western Reserve University, and others.

The University of New Mexico/KEMRI laboratory at the Centre in Kisumu is the research site where a large portion of the molecular investigations of malaria, HIV, and bacteremia are performed. In addition, the primary administrative activities for the Kenyan operations are located at the KEMRI Centre.
