As a cornerstone public health discipline, epidemiology pursues insights into the causes, distribution and prevention of disease in populations. The mission of the
epidemiology program at the UNM Department of Internal Medicine is to advance population-level research and education, and to shape policy decisions and evidence-based practice by identifying risk factors for disease and targets for preventive health care.
Our faculty specializes in a wide range of research and practice areas including infectious and chronic diseases, cancer, environmental and occupational health, substance abuse and genetics. The program has close ties to many UNM HSC departments, centers and colleges where our faculty frequently collaborate. The faculty also collaborate both nationally and internationally.
Through research and scholarship, our epidemiology program strives to produce convincing evidence that will lead to improvements in public health in New Mexico, the US and worldwide. Through education, we strive to advance the next generation of clinicians and scientists in epidemiologic research and public health practice.
