UNM Framework in Global Health

One of the most important challenges facing global health research and training is bringing together individuals with diverse skills to create a multidisciplinary network that addresses the complexities of global health issues.  Based on the critical mass of investigators at the University of New Mexico (UNM) to meet this challenge, we recently received funding for the UNM Framework Program for Global Health (1 R25TW008099-01) under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The UNM Framework Program has brought together diverse faculty and leveraged existing resources to create an integrated approach to research and training in global health. To accomplish our programmatic goals, we formed a multidisciplinary team of researchers from the School of Medicine and Public Health, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Pharmacy, School of Law, and School of Engineering/Computer Sciences. In addition, the Framework Program has formed partnerships for research and training opportunities at National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded international sites (i.e., Africa, Asia, and South America) operated by UNM faculty.

The formation of interdisciplinary global health programs at UNM has allowed us to create new curricular offerings, a Global Health Certificate Program, Annual Southwest Global Health Symposium, and field internships at international sites for undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate, and professional trainees. Importantly, we have also established an administrative core to foster bilateral exchange for research and training across the University and at our international sites.
