Advanced Practice Provider Hospital Medicine Fellowship

The University of New Mexico Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Hospital Medicine Fellowship (HMF) is a 12-month postgraduate fellowship program dedicated to supporting early career development of nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) during their first year of practice in the specialty of Hospital Medicine. Graduates of the HMF will develop strong knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors in these challenging and fast-paced areas of practice and emerge as leaders in their field of chosen focus.

Potential APP fellows are organized, self-motivated, possess a passion for learning, and are prepared to embrace a fast-paced and multidisciplinary healthcare environment delivering care to an underserved population.

Goals of the Fellowship

  1. Clinical excellence. Fellows will demonstrate the skills, knowledge, and attitudes required of APP hospitalists to apply evidence-based medicine in the development of diagnoses, a formation of treatment plans and evaluation of patient responses to treatment.  
  2. Professionalism. Fellows will demonstrate interdisciplinary communication skills and other behaviors of a professional APP hospitalist. Membership in and presentation of academic projects to local professional societies will be mentored and encouraged.
  3. Successful transition to practice. Fellows will demonstrate behaviors and attitudes that are consistent with successful transition and lead to increased satisfaction and retention.
  4. Work-life balance. Fellows will demonstrate behaviors resulting in work-life balance and professional longevity as a busy APP hospitalist.

Over the course of the year, fellows will participate in clinical and didactic experiences enriching their development in the fields of Hospital Medicine. The 12-month program is divided into five training blocks, beginning with a boot camp focused on the core competencies of Hospital Medicine that are essential for the development of novice APP hospitalists. Fellows receive approximately 5 hours per week of protected time for participation in didactic sessions. Clinical and educational exposures included in the fellowship aim to develop the essential critical thinking skills and breadth of knowledge required for a successful career in Hospital Medicine.

Onsite Interview Required for admission. Travel costs at interviewee’s expense.
Work Expectations Generally Mon-Fri program with 8-hour to 12-hour days depending on rotation. During HMF 103 fellows rotate on the overnight cross cover shift for 2 weeks (6 shifts). No vacation will be permitted during the first 16 weeks of the fellowship. Fellows are guaranteed off the 9 holidays observed by UNMH and in addition may take 2 weeks of vacation in one-week blocks (Mon-Fri). Vacation requests for the year are taken on the start date and must be negotiated with one of the program directors.
Salary and Benefits Stipend of $61,000 - $94,500 (dependent on experience) for the 12-month program and the same benefits package as that offered to other UNMH employees. Beyond the 12-month fellowship, there is no guarantee of employment nor are graduates required to commit to positions at UNMH.
Minimum Requirements Must be an NP (FNP or ACNP), CNS or PA and nationally certified. Certification exam results must be provided 90 days prior to start date.​
