Meeting the need for preventive medicine physicians
Preventive medicine is a unique medical specialty which blends the knowledge and skills of clinical medicine with those of population health to address health promotion, chronic and infectious disease prevention, sanitation and environmental health. The UNM program will be one of about 40 across the nation, with a focus on meeting an increasing demand for physician leaders in public health and preventive medicine. Training is tailored to meet the educational needs and professional interest of each physician, with the development of competency in the following areas: biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental and occupational medicine, planning and evaluation of health services, management of health care organizations, research into causes of disease and injury in population groups, and the practice of prevention in clinical medicine.
Program Director’s Welcome
Welcome to the University of New Mexico General Preventive Medicine Residency Program. In cooperation with several affiliated institutions and agencies, we are pleased to offer a new two-year training program for physicians seeking specialized training in preventive medicine and public health.
We are especially interested in applicants with an interest in developing the clinical and population health skills needed to serve diverse and medically underserved groups. Although not required, candidates may have completed a primary care residency or have experience working in community settings, seeking to develop professionally with formal training in population health.
Trainees receive a solid academic foundation in the core areas of public health, apply their skills in a variety of practicum rotations, and develop the ability to perform research through mentored projects and the completion of a Master of Science in Clinical Research degree.
We welcome you to contact us with further questions.
