The Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Preventive Medicine or “Epi” is the only division in Internal Medicine that is not considered a clinical division. It consists of 21 faculty and approximately 15 staff scientists, post-doctoral fellows, and students along with a number of esteemed researchers who hold adjunct volunteer positions. Last year, The Division was the recipient of 25 externally sponsored projects. The Division maintains close ties to many UNM Health Sciences Center departments, centers, and colleges where individual Epi faculty are frequent collaborators. In addition, faculty within the Division collaborate nationally and internationally on many of their projects.

Much of the work of the Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Preventive Medicine is related to the research and prevention mission of the UNM Cancer Center. The Epi Division is also a very active part of teaching within the UNM School of Medicine, from traditional teaching blocks and mentoring medical student research projects, to teaching in specialty degree-granting programs like BA/MD and MPH. The Division’s aim is to grow and maintain a productive research endeavor while assisting the UNM School of Medicine in producing highly effective scientist/practitioners.
