Academic Career

Berwick received her MPH in 1979 and her PhD in 1987 from Yale University. She was principal investigator on a melanoma screening grant at Yale until 1990 when she became an epidemiologist at the Cancer Prevention Research Institute in New York City. In 1994, she moved to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where she was in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She joined the University of New Mexico in 2004. She has held the position of chief in the Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Preventive Medicine, as well as associate director for Population Sciences at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. She stepped down in 2013 to focus on her research in melanoma.

Research Interests

Berwick has conducted research in all aspects of cutaneous malignant melanoma – prevention, molecular epidemiology and survival. She has also studied soft tissue sarcoma, breast and lung cancers.
