Academic Career

Kinney earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Seton Hall University in 1981, her master's in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania in 1985, and her PhD in epidemiology from the University of Texas School of Public Health in 1996. Following a National Cancer Institute-funded postdoctoral research fellowship in cancer control and epidemiology at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, she joined the University of Utah faculty in 1998. Kinney came to UNM in 2013 and is the Carolyn R. Surface Endowed Chair in Cancer Population Sciences. 

Research Interests

Kinney has been an actively funded investigator in cancer prevention and control for over 25 years. Her research brings a combination of behavioral, clinical and epidemiologic perspectives to address unsolved cancer prevention and control problems in diverse populations and settings.

She has also studied genomic risk communication for cancer susceptibility in at-risk individuals and cancer survivors regarding primary therapy, cancer screening, cancer survivorship, health disparities, access to care, behavior change, and community and population behavioral interventions.
